This private tour staying with a local herder family is designed for travelers who want to experience the essence of Mongolia’s nomadic way of life. The good, the bad, and everything that happens in between. This is a raw experience that makes you forget about your life back home for a few days while you embrace off-grid living.
Booking this Mongolia tour is one of the best experiences you can have in the country. The reason Mongolia is such a special destination is because this is really the way people still live. This isn’t a tourist camp designed to give you a fake experience, this is the real thing.
We’ve designed this tour to offer a thoughtful balance between nomadic living, but also feel that it’s important that you spend time in the modern and ancient capital cities, Ulaanbaatar and Kharkhorin. This is to give you a better understanding of historic and modern day Mongolia, and how the country became what it is today. (This Historic Mongolia day tour in Ulaanbaatar will help you get even deeper into that, if you’re a history buff.)
From the modern-day capital, with your driver and knowledgeable guide leading the way, you’ll leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind to head deep into the countryside for several days of living alongside a nomadic family. Here, daily life on the steppe unfolds at a natural pace, shaped by chores, shared meals, and time spent outdoors. This trip offers an honest and unfiltered look at how nomadic life continues today.
This experience focuses on fewer and shorter travel days, allowing the experience to remain comfortable and unhurried, leaving space for city add-ons at the beginning or end of the trip.
This itinerary is well suited for those seeking a sense of adventure, combining immersion, simplicity, and comfort into a clear introduction to Mongolia.

Help comb the animals and learn about Mongolian cashmere in May.
Take it slow in June when flowers blossom and the landscape comes alive with vibrant colors and smells.
Follow the family as they prepare for Naadam in July, training their race horses or just preparing for the local festivities.
Or, opt to book your experience for August, when preparations for fall and winter start to get underway!
No matter when you choose to visit, there is always something going on!
Land at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, where airport transportation will be arranged for your transfer to a centrally located hotel next to Chinggis Khaan Square. The surrounding area is rich with Soviet-era architecture, cafés, restaurants, and city life.
In the evening, meet your guide for a welcome dinner and a brief overview of the journey ahead. Settle in and rest after your travels. Massage services are available at the hotel for those looking to relax and reset.
Depart the city at 8:00 am to begin your overland journey west (approximately 364 km / 226 miles). Stop briefly to purchase supplies before leaving Ulaanbaatar.
Arrive by lunchtime to Kharkhorin, once the capital of the Mongol Empire and a major center of Central Asia in the 13th century.
After lunch at a local diner, visit the Kharkhorin Museum to understand why this location was chosen and what once stood here. Continue to Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia and one of the few to endure the Soviet purges.
Before sunset, continue into the countryside to reach your nomadic host family. Arrive by dinner, learn local customs, and settle into your ger (separate from the family’s) for the night.
Spend two full days living alongside a nomadic herder family. Rise early to take part in morning chores, help care for animals, and learn how food is sourced and prepared. Observe the daily rhythm of nomadic life and the roles each family member plays within the household. You might be surprised to see and learn who does what!
With limited cell service, these days offer a natural pause from modern distractions. Life slows, shaped by weather, daylight, and shared responsibilities, providing a genuine understanding of why this way of life continues today.
Spend the morning with your host family, helping with final chores and sharing a last meal together. Say your goodbyes and begin the drive back to Ulaanbaatar.
Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, you’ll be dropped off at your centrally located hotel to enjoy a hot shower, modern comforts, and a restful evening. The rest of today is at leisure.
Book your international departure for anytime today. We will arrange an airport transfer for you from the hotel.
