First Visit to Mongolia? Start Planning

Understanding how things work in Mongolia can be confusing. Here are some things I’d book for my first trip to the country.

🚕 Airport Transfer into Ulaanbaatar

Book your airport transfer before you land. Ulaanbaatar taxis are chaotic and this is worth the peace of mind.

→ Book an Airport Transfer

🛌 Where to Stay

My picks at every budget, all within walking distance of the main square:

→ Hostel One: best hostel in the city for solo travelers

→ Urgoo Hotel: locally owned boutique spot, great value and location

→ H9 Hotel Nine: steps from Sukhbaatar Square, ideal for first-time visitors

→ Best Western Premier Tuushin: 4-star hotel next to Sukhbaatar Square, super comfortable

About this 10-day Horseback Archery Tour

Since 2022 I’ve come to know and respect the local team of horseback archers you’ll be training with for this experience. Not only are they some of the most fearless people you’ll ever met, but they are also some of the most interesting people you’ll come across in Mongolia. They have heart, passion, and a respect for this ancient sport that is sure to rub off on you during your training time with them. They are as important to the experience as the training, and they are what make it so special.

This 10-day experience combines two different 3-day training sessions for a more comprehensive and immersive training experience.

A 2-day break between each session will allow for your body to decompress and recover before jumping into the second part of this training. During your off time, explore Ulaanbaatar with the help of local guides and get to know Ulaanbaatar, and Mongolian culture, on a much deeper level. Learn how to make traditional Mongolian food, visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum, meet with monks, and watch a cultural show.

I’ll be one of your hosts throughout this entire experience, and I sincerely can’t wait to show you this traditional sport. I’m sure you’ll become as obsessed with it as I am.

If you still have questions about horseback archery, and you’re hoping to get a better understanding of what to expect during this experience, watch the team train National Geographic host Eva Zu Beck for her show Superskilled. Bonus points if you spot me, or my car, during the episode!

Before You Book: Is horseback archery for me?

Due to the nature and intensity of this trip, it’s important you are 100% honest with yourself, and us, before booking this experience.

This 10-day horseback archery training is built for:

  • Active and adventurous travelers who love the outdoors, enjoy learning new things, and are always open to new experiences.
  • Someone who avoids touristic things in search of authentic experiences.
  • You do not need to be an advanced horse rider to join this training, but if you are a beginner rider you will need to take lessons before booking. Not only is this for your safety, but this will also allow you to get the most out of this experience.
  • Travelers who love challenges and enjoy being in a group setting. This tour is perfect for solo travelers!
  • Someone who is interested in learning about traditional Mongolian culture by jumping right into it.

If this sounds like you, then we’d love to have you join us!

This trip requires a medium to high level of physicality. No prior archery experience is necessary, but we do ask that you have some riding experience before joining this trip.

Additionally, due to the small stature of Mongolian horses, there will be a height limit of 185 cm and weight limit of 85 kg when fully clothed.

This trip involves a lot of time outdoors, exposed to the elements. Please pack properly and prepare for every weather condition.

Safety during this trip is a priority. You must be willing to listen to the instructors and follow their instructions so that you don’t hurt yourself, any other participants, or the animals you’re working with. Horse riding is a dangerous sport and if the team leader deems it unsafe for you to participate in any part of the training, we ask that you respect this decision.

This mounted archery training camp is geared towards active, curious travelers who are open to learning a new skill while experiencing a unique side of Mongolia. This trip is a great add-on experience to our Naadam Festival group tour.

This experience includes outhouse and pit toilets, long days outside, shared camping accommodation, and living without running water or electricity. You will be dirty, tired, and sore, and you should be the type of person who will be completely happy about it!

The menu will include traditional Mongolian dishes, which means meat and dairy heavy meals. Please let me know if you have any dietary restrictions ahead of time.
