We’ll leave Ulaanbaatar around 9:00 a.m. and head west toward Mongol Nomadic Camp, a one-stop showcase of Mongolia’s traditional lifestyle.
Sure, it’s a bit staged, but it’s also smart, fun, and surprisingly helpful. If you don’t have time to go fully off-grid, this is the next best thing. If you’re traveling to Ulaanbaatar for a work trip, long weekend, or quick layover, this is the day tour you shouldn’t miss.
Learn how nomads pack up their gers (yurts), how herders live seasonally, and how traditional dairy products are made. It’s also the perfect intro if you are headed on a deeper nomadic journey, giving you the context to recognize what’s actually happening when you’re deep in the countryside without a translator or local to guide you.
After lunch inside a herder family’s ger, we’ll continue west to Khustai National Park. The 50,000 hectares of national park are home of the Takhi, or Przewalski’s horse, the world’s last truly wild horse.
The Takhi have a story worth telling. In a country known for taming horses and building empires on their backs, these animals resisted domestication. Once extinct in the wild by the 1960s, they were reintroduced to Mongolia in 1992 by conservationists who believed in second chances. Today, they run free once again in Khustai. This is the only place where you can see them in the country.
Spotting wildlife is a classic Mongolian experience. Whether or not you find the Takhi, the act of tracking them and hearing nothing but your breath and heartbeat is meditative in itself. An integral part of this journey is not mistaking a deer for a Takhi, or a goat for an Argali, Mongolia’s famous wild sheep.
If you do catch sight of the Takhi, well, as Mongolians say, you’re khiimor’toi (hee-mor-toy): “your spirit is riding high..
We’ll return to Ulaanbaatar by early evening relaxed, refreshed, and probably a little more wild.
