The Best Tour for History Buffs in Ulaanbaatar

This 1-day tour starts at 9:00 am. Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and whisk you back through time, starting with Mongolia’s earliest days.

From ancient nomads and mighty Khans to royalty, socialism, and democracy, you’ll explore five historical time periods that shaped modern Mongolia.

To add to this experience, you’ll have lunch inside a traditional family ger (yurt) to see how nomadic families live today.

This is a driving tour that takes you not only around Ulaanbaatar, but also to the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, 70 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.

Please be prepared for a day of driving, which will include sitting in traffic as you return to the city during rush hour.

What to Expect on This Day Tour

Start your day stepping into the Bronze Age, where ancient petroglyphs carved into the cliffs whisper stories of Mongolia’s earliest civilizations, survival, and sky gods. Then, jump straight into the 13th century and stare history in the face (literally) as you stand beneath the largest equestrian statue in the world: Chinggis Khaan, gleaming in steel, a not-so-subtle reminder of the largest empire the world has ever seen.

Next, we shift from conquest to contemplation. At Aryapala Meditation Center, you’ll climb through fresh mountain air into a Buddhist temple tucked in the hills of Terelj National Park. Here you’ll learn how Buddhism, which became Mongolia’s official religion during the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty, reshaped the culture, pacifying generations of warriors and folding spiritual practice into daily life. After your meditation session, reset with a warm lunch inside a local’s home and taste the present-day hospitality rooted in centuries of tradition.

Back at central Ulaanbaatar, the Soviet era takes center stage. First up: Zaisan Monument, a massive Soviet-built tribute that praises Mongol-Russian brotherhood in bold, literal strokes. But just down the hill, history flips on its head. Sükhbaatar Square marks the very place where democratic protests against the Soviet regime took hold in 1990, the turning point in Mongolia’s modern story. You’ll close the loop at the Zorig Activists’ Memorial, honoring one of the heroes of that peaceful revolution, a man whose voice led us toward democracy, and who gave everything to see it through.

It’s a full-throttle ride through 3,000 years of Mongolian history — one day, six eras, countless stories.
