Learn how Mongolia’s largest cashmere brand goes from goat to coat. Behind the scenes at the factory and shopping at the Factory Store.
Highlights of this Gobi Factory Tour include:
The first time I toured the Gobi Factory, I couldn’t help but smile the entire time. To see how the brand goes from, how they like to say goat to coat, is fascinating!
First, we started by visiting the ladies who separated the raw cashmere that came direct from the herders. Gobi purchases 83% of the raw cashmere sold by local herders across the country! Let me tell you, that is a lot of cashmere. Cashmere that is all sorted by hand.
From there, the cashmere gets conditioned, processed, dyed, and is rested. Yes, rested.
Then, the big machines come it and it starts the process to become yarn. The yarn is still really delicate at this point, so from here it’s twisted into usable, durable yarn that’s ready to use.
After that, it’s made into fabrics or panels that eventually are hand sewn together on a floor where more than 700 people work! Then quality control, and so on and so on.
Like I said, it is fascinating!
While there are so many intricate details that you’ll hear about during the tour, just seeing this entire production process is worth every second of your time.
From seeing the original machines from 1981, when the factory opened, to touching the raw, unprocessed cashmere, this day tour doesn’t disappoint.
The factory tour is about one hour, and this experience starts at 9:00 am. We will pick you up from your hotel or hostel in the city center, drive to the factory, have the tour, and you’ll have free time to shop afterwards. Depending on how long you’ll shop, we estimate you’ll return to the city center around 1 pm.
This tour is only available on weekdays.
Gobi Cashmere is Mongolia’s oldest and biggest cashmere brand. Since 1981 they have been Mongolia’s largest buyer of raw cashmere and producer of cashmere goods.
Today, Gobi buys brushed raw cashmere directly from herding families across the country. In fact, they buy 83% off all the raw cashmere available between March and June.
Approximately 1,200 tons of raw cashmere are processed annually at the factory. Every year, Gobi Cashmere produces approximately:
Gobi Cashmere is sold around the world and there are two branch stores in Berlin and Dusseldorf, Germany.
Gobi Cashmere has long been my favorite Mongolian cashmere brand. Not only are their pieces beautiful, but their fit is always perfect, and each piece has become a staple in my wardrobe. Buying a piece of Gobi Cashmere is investing in a article of clothing that you’ll have for many years to come.
Plus, cashmere is the perfect fabric to wear in Mongolia for many reasons.
Firstly, it is incredibly warm, which is essential for surviving Mongolia’s drastic weather changes.
Secondly, it doesn’t smell so you can wear it comfortably for many days on end.
Finally, it packs down well so it doesn’t take up much space in your bag.
Needless to say, it’s one of the most versatile garments you can have when visiting and traveling through Mongolia! It also makes a great souvenir to take home with you to remember your trip.
