Understanding how things work in Mongolia can be confusing. Here are some things I’d book for my first trip to the country.
🚕 Airport Transfer into Ulaanbaatar
Book your airport transfer before you land. Ulaanbaatar taxis are chaotic and this is worth the peace of mind.
🛌 Where to Stay
My picks at every budget, all within walking distance of the main square:
→ Hostel One: best hostel in the city for solo travelers
→ Urgoo Hotel: locally owned boutique spot, great value and location
→ H9 Hotel Nine: steps from Sukhbaatar Square, ideal for first-time visitors
→ Best Western Premier Tuushin: 4-star hotel next to Sukhbaatar Square, super comfortable
👉 Make the Most of Your Time in Ulaanbaatar
If you have extra days, these are the day tours and 1-day experiences that start and end in Ulaanbaatar I’d actually recommend:
→ Ulaanbaatar: Private Guided City Tour with Car
→ Cooking Class in a Local Home
→ Mongolian Traditional Dance & Music Concert Ticket
→ Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue & Terelj National Park
→ Ulaanbaatar: Private Nomad Horseback Ride + Homemade Lunch
Since 2022 I’ve come to know and respect the local team of horseback archers you’ll be training with for this experience. Not only are they some of the most fearless people you’ll ever met, but they are also some of the most interesting people you’ll come across in Mongolia. They have heart, passion, and a respect for this ancient sport that is sure to rub off on you during your training time with them. They are as important to the experience as the training, and they are what make it so special.
This 10-day experience combines two different 3-day training sessions for a more comprehensive and immersive training experience.
A 2-day break between each session will allow for your body to decompress and recover before jumping into the second part of this training. During your off time, explore Ulaanbaatar with the help of local guides and get to know Ulaanbaatar, and Mongolian culture, on a much deeper level. Learn how to make traditional Mongolian food, visit the Chinggis Khaan Museum, meet with monks, and watch a cultural show.
I’ll be one of your hosts throughout this entire experience, and I sincerely can’t wait to show you this traditional sport. I’m sure you’ll become as obsessed with it as I am.
If you still have questions about horseback archery, and you’re hoping to get a better understanding of what to expect during this experience, watch the team train National Geographic host Eva Zu Beck for her show Superskilled. Bonus points if you spot me, or my car, during the episode!
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and get your first glimpses into life in Mongolia. An airport transfer and hotel in the city are included in this experience, so you don’t have to worry about anything when you land. In the evening, meet Breanna for dinner to talk about the experience ahead.
Pick up this morning will be bright and early at 8:30 am. You’ll make one stop at the State Department Store to meet the archers only doing the 3-day training before heading off to the archer’s camp.
Once you arrive at the archer’s camp, jump right into training.
Now that you’ve got the basics covered, it’s time to continue training and progressing your skills. Continue practicing your technique and fundamental skills on the ground, with free time to practice throughout the day. You’ll be surprised how quickly you start to speed up on the track, and you’ll soon find your arrows hitting targets.
Today full on warrior mode is activated. Continue to practice what you learned the past two days while speeding up your shooting, getting your horse moving a bit quicker, and shooting off more and more arrows on each run.
For a change of pace, and because you’re in Mongolia, today is all about history and getting more familiar with Mongolian culture. The morning will start with a sit-down with a local monk. Afterwards head to the Chinggis Khaan Museum and lunch at one of our favorite Mongolian restaurants in town. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure and meet again at 5:30 pm to head to a cultural show where you’ll hear throat singing, traditional dancing, listen to traditional instruments, and have your mind blown by contortionists. End the day with dinner and head out to a local bar (or two) to get a taste of Ulaanbaatar nightlife.
The cultural immersion continues. We’ll head to the ger district for a cooking class inside a local family’s ger, learning how to make a traditional Mongolian dish. From the family’s home we’ll head to meet a gentleman who makes the decorative wooden pieces you find inside a ger. Tour his small, humble studio while learning about the process to make these nomadic homes.
After a few days rest, return to your training and resume warrior mode. Practice proper techniques, get reacquainted with the horses, and really focus on excelling in the saddle with your bow in hand. There will be some new additions to the training, which will be a great chance to hear the focus on your form and really lean into the training regimen.
For your final day of training, you’ll really feel everything coming together. You’ll be faster in the track, more comfortable in the saddle, and your aim should be much more consistent. The goal will be to have you graduating from a canter by now and galloping down the track at full speed, releasing three arrows along the way.
