Eastern Mongolia

It’s often hard to understand which region to visit in Mongolia, and when. It’s even harder to decide what to do, and how to plan the best itinerary, when you do finally go! Below find detailed information on the eastern region (Khentii, Sukhbaatar, and Dornod), as well as day-to-day itineraries and other important things to know.

Eastern Mongolia is the road less traveled, and that is precisely its appeal. This is the Mongolia of Chinggis Khaan. Vast open steppe, rolling grasslands, and a nomadic culture that feels completely untouched by tourism. You can ride horses for days without crossing a paved road or seeing another foreign traveler.

It’s not the easiest region to navigate independently, but with the right guide it is deeply, quietly extraordinary. If you want to experience Mongolia as it has existed for centuries, come east.

Seasonal Temperatures & When to Visit

Eastern Mongolia’s climate is a different beast from the other regions. Instead of mountain cold, you get open steppe continental extreme. That means: big swings, bitter wind-driven winters, and surprisingly hot summers.

In Choibalsan, summers are warm, winters are frigid, dry, and windy, with temperatures across the year typically ranging from −23°C (−10°F) to 28°C (83°F). Extreme cold snaps can push to −33°C (−27°F), while summer heat waves have reached 37°C (100°F).

In Öndörkhaan (Khentii), the open flat plain and river-valley position means winter wind chill can push effective temperatures to −40°C (−40°F).

Winter (Dec – Feb)

January is the coldest month in Choibalsan, with an average high of just 8°F (−13°C) and an average low of −9°F (−23°C). The regional January average temperature overall hovers around −22°C. All three provinces experience similar depths of cold, the open steppe offers no shelter from Siberian winds.

Spring (Mar – May)

By May in Choibalsan, average highs reach 67°F (19°C) and lows 41°F (5°C), but March still averages a high of only 32°F (0°C) with lows at 12°F (−11°C). Spring is the windiest, dustiest season across eastern Mongolia, and a late snowstorm in April is entirely normal.

Summer (June – Aug)

July is the peak in Choibalsan, with an average high of 83°F (28°C) and an average low of 59°F (15°C). This is markedly warmer than the north and west. Baruun-Urt’s warmest month also peaks at around 28°C (83°F), confirming how consistent the steppe climate is across Dornod and Sukhbaatar. Khentii’s mountain influence in the north keeps it a few degrees cooler than the open steppe further east.

Fall (Sept – Nov)

September in Choibalsan still averages a comfortable high of 65°F (18°C), dropping sharply to 26°F (−3°C) by November, with lows going from 41°F (5°C) in September to 9°F (−13°C) in November. October is the transition month, day temperatures can still be pleasant but nights turn firmly below freezing.

how to get there

Key Things to Know for the Whole Region

All three provinces use Tenger Plaza as the UB departure point, not Dragon Center, which serves the north and west.

Only Choibalsan (Dornod) has flights from UB. If time is short, fly there and do the other provinces by road from the east.

You can link the three provinces together: shared jeeps run between Choibalsan, Öndörkhaan, and Baruun-Urt daily, so you don’t have to backtrack to Ulaanbaatar between them.

Eastern Mongolia’s roads are among the least developed in the country. For anywhere beyond the provincial capitals, a 4WD with a local driver is not optional, it’s essential.

Khentii Province (Capital: Öndörkhaan/Chinggis)

Distance from UB: ~331 km
Drive time: ~4–5 hours

🚌 By Bus

Buses depart daily from Tenger Plaza at 8:00am. The one-way ticket is approximately MNT 43,600 (~$13). Travel time is 5–6 hours. Buy your ticket the day before at the terminal or online.

🚐 Shared Minivan

Available from Tenger Plaza most mornings, departs when full. Faster than the bus but no fixed schedule. Just show up early.

🚙 Private Car/Driver

The primary route is the A240 highway, paved but with uneven and gravel sections off the main road. A 4×4 is recommended for rural areas. Fuel stations are available in Öndörkhaan but sparse beyond it. Expect to pay ~$80–120/day for a driver + 4WD.

✈️ Domestic Flight

Öndörkhaan airport no longer has scheduled flights to Ulaanbaatar. Ground transport only.

Going deeper: To reach Dadal (birthplace of Genghis Khan), take the bus to Öndörkhaan, stay the night, then catch a van to Dadal, about another 5 hours.

Dornod Province (Capital: Choibalsan)

Distance from UB: ~670 km
Drive time: ~10–12 hours

🚌 By Bus

Buses depart daily from the Eastern Bus Terminal (Tenger Plaza) at 8:00 am and arrive in Choibalsan around 11:00 pm, a full day’s ride. These are often old Russian buses as part of the road is unmaintained dirt. The bus stops twice for meals and a few more times for snacks. Return buses depart Choibalsan at 8:00 pm. Buy your ticket a day or two in advance, seats are numbered. Fare is approximately MNT 60,000–65,000 (~$17–19).

🚐 Shared Minivan

Shared vans also run from Tenger Plaza, departing around 9:00–10:00 am when full. Slightly faster than the bus but less predictable timing.

🚙 Private Car/Driver

The driving distance from Ulaanbaatar to Choibalsan is about 670 km, taking roughly 9–10 hours. Road quality varies, some paved sections, some gravel and dirt, especially in the eastern stretch. Budget ~$80–120/day for a driver + 4WD, arrange through a UB guesthouse or tour operator.

✈️ Domestic Flight

Choibalsan Airport (COQ) has domestic flights to Ulaanbaatar operated by Hunnu Air, running Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Flight time is about 1.5 hours. This is the only eastern province with a functioning domestic flight connection, a major time-saver for a 12-hour overland journey. Book via hunnuair.com or through a local travel agent in UB.

🚂 Train

Dornod has no passenger train service, though freight rail lines exist for mining operations.

Sukhbaatar Province (Capital: Baruun-Urt)

Distance from UB: ~557 km
Drive time: ~8–10 hours

🚌 By Bus

Buses depart daily from the Eastern Bus Terminal in Ulaanbaatar at 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. The 8:00am bus arrives in Baruun-Urt around 11:00 pm. Return buses leave Baruun-Urt at 8:00 pm. Buy a ticket a day or two in advance, seats are numbered. The bus stops for meals along the way. The one-way ticket is approximately MNT 43,600 (~$13).

🚐 Shared Minivan

There are also shared jeeps leaving daily from both Choibalsan and Öndörkhaan toward Baruun-Urt, making it easy to link the three eastern provinces together without returning to UB.

🚙 Private Car/Driver

Driving from Ulaanbaatar to Baruun-Urt takes approximately 8 hours and covers about 566 km. Private car costs roughly $70–110 for the trip. Roads are mostly steppe track, a 4WD is essential.
